🌐 Our Largest Meetup Yet

April’s Capital Region Mesh meetup marked a major milestone for the project:
19 attendees — every seat filled — our biggest gathering to date.

The energy in the room reflected both the growing interest in decentralized communication and the momentum building around CRM’s spring initiatives. This month paired a highly interactive Mesh Open House with a forward‑looking demonstration of emerging LoRa 2.4 GHz voice capabilities.

🛠️ Mesh Open House: Hands‑On Learning & Real Hardware

We opened the evening with a hands‑on Mesh Open House, designed to meet people exactly where they were — whether brand‑new to Meshtastic or already experimenting with their own nodes.

Participants explored:

  • A high‑level overview of how mesh networking fits into CRM’s architecture
  • Device‑specific troubleshooting and configuration help
  • Flashing firmware and tuning radios for real‑world use
  • Understanding channels, routing, and MeshCore rooms
  • How different hardware platforms behave in practice

Instead of paper handouts, attendees were able to handle and test physical units from CRM’s recommended device lineup — a rare chance to compare form factors, antennas, screens, and UX side‑by‑side.

Several attendees also purchased new nodes during the session, leaving with fully configured devices ready to join the regional mesh.

🎙️ Live Demo: 2.4 GHz LoRa Voice in Action

After a short break, Alex led a presentation on the fast‑moving world of digital voice over LoRa 2.4 GHz, an experimental capability gaining traction within the Meshtastic community.

The session covered:

  • The differences between 2.4 GHz LoRa and sub‑GHz LoRa for voice
  • Current boards available for experimentation
  • Latency, bandwidth, and codec considerations
  • How voice might integrate into CRM’s multi‑layer architecture

The highlight was a live demonstration using two 2.4 GHz devices forming a tiny ad‑hoc voice mesh. Alex showcased:

  • Broadcast voice messaging
  • Direct, device‑to‑device voice communication
  • The “walkie‑talkie” interaction style of the current experimental mode

Hearing real‑time voice travel across a low‑power mesh made the potential of this technology immediately tangible.

🧩 Community Conversations & Deeper Questions

Rather than holding a formal working session this month, we used the final portion of the evening for extended conversation and hands‑on exploration. With a full room and many new faces, the unstructured time gave participants space to connect, compare hardware, ask in‑depth questions about both the technology and the organization, and continue experimenting with devices.

The shift proved valuable — reinforcing CRM’s commitment to meeting people where they are and creating space for curiosity, collaboration, and shared learning.

🌱 Looking Ahead

April’s meetup showcased the strength of our growing community — curious newcomers, returning contributors, and hands‑on experimenters all building toward a more resilient regional mesh.

Next month, we’ll continue this momentum with another evening of collaborative learning and spring deployment preparation.

Full details will be available soon on the
May 2026 Meetup page.
